To educate from within than to instruct from without....

The name "Guide" was taken from a famous frontier regiment in the British Indian Army, the Corps of Guides, which was noted for its skills in tracking and survival.

"Our method of training is to educate from within than to instruct from without; to offer games and activities which, while being attractive to the girl, will seriously educate her morally, mentally and physically." Girl Guiding by Lord Baden-Powell (1918)

Centenary of the Girl Guides

Many were concerned by the advent of Girl Guiding as they believed this would turn the girls into "immodest, impolite tomboys". Fortunately, Agnes Baden-Powell's character help to assure these people. And in early 1910, there were as high as 6000 registered members.

Formation of the Guide Association, 1910

The first group of Guides was formed by Lord Robert Baden-Powell in 1910. He appointed his sister Agnes Baden-Powell to take charge of Girl Guiding in its early years. Later his new wife (Lady olave Baden-Powell) became involved and she eventually took over the responsibilities.

The interesting "multi-designed" clown triggerfish

This clown triggerfish has an interesting look; one part consists of big white spots on dark background; another part is of black spots on yellow; towards the tail, the small spots are in lines; the mouth is yellow/orange and it has stripes on the caudal fin....

Because of creating maxicards, sometimes I am being "forced" to go into details which I would have overlooked or ignored otherwise.

Happy Fish? But how do you know? (鱼之乐)

When Zhuangzi and Huizi were strolling on the bridge, Zhuangzi commented that the fishes were happy swimming in the river.....
“You are not a fish, how do you know the fish is happy?" Huizi asked him.
"And you are not me, how do you know I do not know the fish is happy?" Said Zhuangzi.

Fish - you bring in prosperity

The two words "fish "(鱼) and surplus"(余) sound the same in chinese. In Feng Shui, "fish" is thus considered a symbol of good fortune and abundant wealth. So having an aquarium at home with beautiful fishes in it may not be for decorating or due to passion for fish, it could be just for bringing in prosperity.

Miss by a whisker...?

I have encountered various problems when dealing with cancellations in maximaphily; incomplete - with last one or two lines missing; unclear - due to over-diluted ink; smeared -as the surface of postcard is too glossy, etc.

Take a look at this maxicard. The cancellation was done by the postal staff - beautiful, without any of the problems mentioned. But sad to say : looks like it just misses the teeth of the stamp by a whisker!

Anyway, I am still hopeful that someone will confirm - the postcode touches "a tooth".

The glass slipper

In maximaphily, looking for a postcard concordant with the stamp is very much like "looking for the foot that fits the glass slipper" in the Cinderella story. The Prince was lucky; he had no time frame; he could take his own sweet time to look for the right foot. But that's not true in maximaphily. So when time is running short and the right "foot" still doesn't come by, I will force the foot in to fit... , consoling myself - "A little bit different only - never mind lah!"
